Two dead crows found near the Rolando and Skyline neighborhoods tested positive for West Nile virus, according to county health officials cited by KPBS.
The detections are among the early signs of West Nile activity in San Diego County this year. Officials said no local human cases have been reported, but mosquitoes can spread the virus after biting infected birds.
County officials are urging residents to follow the usual mosquito-season steps: dump standing water around homes, use insect repellent when outdoors, keep window and door screens in good condition and report dead birds or mosquito breeding sources to the Vector Control Program.
The advisory matters for Santee because warm inland weather and backyard standing water can quickly turn ordinary containers, plant saucers and neglected pools into mosquito habitat. Residents can report mosquito problems to the county at 858-694-2888 or vector@sdcounty.ca.gov.
