The Santee Sheriff's Station conducted a focused enforcement operation on Thursday, March 26, to address the increasing misuse of electric bikes (e-bikes) and electric motorcycles in the city. The operation aimed to curb violations of state and local traffic laws.
During the operation, deputies made between 80 to 100 contacts with the public, providing educational materials to riders and parents about legal requirements and safe riding practices. The enforcement effort resulted in 12 citations for various violations.
In addition, ten electric motorcycles were impounded. According to the Sheriff's Department, fines for the violations could reach up to $1,400.
Authorities are reminding the public that while properly equipped e-bikes can be legally operated on public roads, electric motorcycles are not permitted on public streets unless they meet all requirements for street-legal motorcycles, including registration, licensing, and insurance.
