Santee Adds New Basic Life Support Ambulance to Emergency Fleet

The Santee Fire Department and the Santee-Lakeside Emergency Medical Services Authority (SLEMSA) have expanded their emergency fleet with the addition of a new Basic Life Support (BLS) ambulance, designated BLS 5, which officially began service on April 1.

The unit, which is the third BLS ambulance for the joint authority, is part of a tiered response strategy aimed at keeping Advanced Life Support (ALS) units available for the most critical, life-threatening emergencies. By dispatching BLS units for non-life-threatening calls, the department can more effectively manage a high volume of medical requests.

BLS ambulances are staffed by two emergency medical technicians (EMTs) who can provide wound care, oxygen, and basic medications. ALS units include at least one Firefighter/Paramedic capable of more invasive, life-saving interventions such as cardiac monitoring and IVs.

"Putting BLS 5 into service is another important investment in public safety and emergency medical services for our community," said Kyle Moyneur, Deputy Fire Chief of the Santee Fire Department. The rollout coincides with the recent addition of 11 new EMTs to the department, further strengthening the city's ability to serve its approximately 60,000 residents.
