San Diego County health officials confirmed the region's first Clade I mpox case, a public health development worth noting for Santee residents and families across East County.
The California Department of Public Health confirmed the case, according to the County News Center. County officials said the patient likely contracted the virus while traveling internationally to an area where Clade I mpox is circulating.
The county said it is monitoring identified contacts and that no one has reported symptoms. Officials advised people to contact a healthcare provider if they develop mpox-like symptoms, including rash, fever or swollen lymph nodes, especially after travel or possible exposure.
County health officials said the two-dose JYNNEOS vaccine provides the strongest protection against Clade I and Clade II mpox. The vaccine is recommended for people at higher risk, those with potential exposure and travelers who anticipate close or intimate contact while abroad, and it is available through healthcare providers and county sexual health clinics.
San Diego County has reported 27 mpox cases this year, mostly among people who were not fully vaccinated, according to the county. Residents can text COSD MPOX to 98256 for updates or visit the county's mpox webpage for more information.
