Construction is underway on Navajo Family Apartments, a new 45-unit affordable housing community at 7005 Navajo Road in San Carlos, according to East County Magazine. The four-story project is being developed and managed by Community HousingWorks and will include one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments for households earning 30% to 70% of area median income. Eight homes will be reserved for residents with intellectual or developmental disabilities. The $32 million development is supported by $3.4 million from San Diego County’s Innovative Housing Trust Fund, according to the report. The county fund helps close financing gaps for affordable housing projects. For Santee and nearby East County residents, the location is notable because it sits near Cowles Mountain, Lake Murray and Mission Trails Regional Park. It also replaces the vacant site where Nicolosi’s Italian Restaurant once operated before moving its San Carlos location to Santee. Move-ins are expected to begin next spring.
