The rural East County town of Campo is being offered for sale for $6 million, according to ABC 10News, putting a recognizable backcountry community back in the regional real estate spotlight.

The reported listing includes a church, a leased Border Patrol station, a VFW, 27 apartments, a hardware store and other property tied to the town. ABC 10News reported that Campo had previously been listed in 2019 and again in 2024, when the asking price was $6.5 million before the property came off the market.

The current owner, John Ray, has owned the property for 22 years, according to the report. Listing agent Nick Hernandez told ABC 10News the sale covers a specific portion of Campo and said the properties generate about $40,000 a month in current rents.

For Santee readers, the sale is not a city issue, but it is an East County land-use story worth watching. Campo sits along the southeastern county corridor, and major ownership changes there can shape future discussions about rural housing, commercial activity and backcountry development.

ABC 10News reported that the parcels are not considered historical land, though Campo itself has deep regional history, including ties to a World War II-era military base.
