A La Mesa domestic violence call escalated early Saturday when police say a gunshot passed through an apartment wall and struck a sleeping neighbor, according to East County Magazine, which cited La Mesa Police.

La Mesa Police received a 911 call at 3:38 a.m. Aug. 8 about domestic violence inside an apartment at 8420 Buckland St. Police said the gunfire went through a shared wall and wounded a 51-year-old neighbor. The neighbor was taken to a hospital in stable condition.

Police identified the suspect as Trevor Shell, 31. According to the report, officers said Shell pointed a handgun at responding police officers and pulled the trigger, but the gun malfunctioned. Shell allegedly left the gun behind, fled on foot and was quickly arrested.

No officers fired shots. Police checked on the domestic violence victim and found she was shaken but physically unharmed, according to the report. Shell was taken to a hospital for evaluation after police said he continued to resist while in custody.

For Santee and East County readers, the case is another reminder that domestic violence calls can become broader neighborhood safety emergencies quickly, especially in dense apartment settings. Police said Shell would be booked into San Diego County Jail on multiple charges after his release from the hospital.
