Two Killed in I-8 Rollover Near Jacumba; CHP Points to Fatigue, Seat Belt Use

Two Texas men died Sunday evening after a pickup overturned on Interstate 8 near Jacumba, according to East County Magazine.

The single-vehicle crash happened about 7:35 p.m. May 3 just west of Carrizo Gorge Road. East County Magazine reported that a 20-year-old man from Edinburg, Texas, was driving a 2024 GMC Sierra eastbound at about 70 mph when preliminary investigators say he fell asleep at the wheel.

The pickup veered off the roadway, hit the center median and a dirt embankment, then overturned multiple times. The driver, who was wearing a seat belt, survived. Two passengers, a 26-year-old man and a 25-year-old man from Alamo, Texas, were not buckled in and died at the scene, according to the report.

CHP Capt. Michael Monteagudo said fatigue behind the wheel significantly impairs judgment and reaction time, and urged drivers to pull over when drowsy and make sure every occupant is buckled up. The names of the passengers are being withheld pending family notification.

The crash happened in the far East County high desert, but I-8 is a key route for Santee and East County drivers heading to the mountains, desert and Imperial County. Investigators have not said whether drugs or alcohol were involved, and the investigation remains ongoing.
