A Marine Corps F-35 fighter jet crashed Friday morning at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, erupting in flames and sparking a vegetation fire, according to Patch.

The aircraft went down around 10 a.m. near Miramar Road and Mitscher Way, the Marine Corps said. The pilot ejected safely and was taken to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment of injuries that officials described as non-life-threatening.

Patch reported that the aircraft was assigned to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing's Marine Aircraft Group 11. The Marine Corps classified the crash as a Class A mishap, a category used for accidents involving major property damage, permanent disability or death.

San Diego Fire-Rescue crews responded to the vegetation fire after the crash. The cause of the mishap remained under investigation Friday.

The crash did not happen in East County, but MCAS Miramar is close enough that military training, emergency response activity and aircraft incidents are often noticed across inland San Diego communities. Source: Patch, citing the Marine Corps.
