La Mesa will add a no-turn-on-red sign at El Paso and Lake Murray Boulevard after the City Council unanimously backed the change ahead of the new school year, according to Times of San Diego. The intersection is used by families walking to Murray Manor Elementary, where classes are set to resume in the coming week.

The request grew out of parent safety concerns after a near miss involving a child walking to school. Times of San Diego reported that parent Megan Webb started a petition in November 2025 that drew more than 200 signatures and later brought attention from Councilmember Lauren Cazares.

The same council discussion also touched on other neighborhood traffic concerns, including a repaired signal at Baltimore Drive and Lake Park Way, temporary speed bumps on Dugan Avenue and requests for speed controls on Laird Street. The La Mesa Police Department had not commented on enforcement plans as school begins, the outlet reported.

For Santee and East County families, the story is a reminder that school-year traffic changes can happen block by block. Drivers should watch for new signs, school-hour pedestrian traffic and families using crossings near campuses as students return from summer break.
