Cities across San Diego County are tightening e-bike rules after a sharp rise in serious injuries, with San Diego, Carlsbad and Escondido all taking action this week, according to inewsource.

San Diego voted Tuesday to join other county cities in banning children 11 and younger from riding e-bikes. Carlsbad, which already has restrictions in place, launched a public portal for reporting unsafe riding. Escondido directed staff Wednesday to gather more public input and injury data before returning with possible updates to its rules.

inewsource reported that Rady Children's Hospital had three e-bike injuries serious enough to activate a trauma team in 2021, compared with 262 last year. The article noted that Chula Vista, Coronado, La Mesa, Poway, San Marcos and Santee have already enacted age limits allowed under a state law written specifically for San Diego County.

For Santee families, the regional debate is no longer abstract. The city is already part of the countywide pilot approach, and nearby cities are now weighing whether age limits, fines, safety classes or enforcement tools should go further.

The next thing to watch is how Escondido rewrites its proposal after public feedback, since those details could shape what other inland cities consider as e-bikes remain popular for school trips and neighborhood transportation.
