Residents and business owners in Crest may now qualify for property insurance discounts after the San Miguel Consolidated Fire Protection District was added to California's 2026 Fire Risk Reduction Community List, according to East County Magazine. The designation took effect July 1 after approval by the California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection.

The state list recognizes local jurisdictions that meet wildfire planning and risk-reduction standards. Under California's Safer from Wildfires insurance regulations, insurers are required to consider qualifying community wildfire mitigation efforts when determining rates for eligible properties.

The Crest Fire Safe Council urged residents and businesses to check with their insurance companies to see what discounts may be available. East County Magazine reported that the amount of any premium reduction varies by insurer and policy.

The San Miguel Consolidated Fire Protection District serves Crest, Spring Valley, Rancho San Diego, Casa de Oro, Bostonia, Grossmont, Mt. Helix and nearby unincorporated communities. The report also noted that several other East County agencies have Fire Risk Reduction Community designations, including the Alpine Fire Protection District, Lakeside Fire Protection District, Santee Fire Department and San Diego County Fire Protection District.

For Santee and East County homeowners, the next step is straightforward: confirm whether the property falls within a designated jurisdiction, then ask the insurance carrier whether the community-level mitigation designation or additional home-hardening work could affect premiums.
