Alaskan Storm Bringing Heavy Rain, Strong Winds to Santee This Week

An Alaskan storm is set to cycle through San Diego County Monday through Thursday, bringing significant rainfall, strong winds, and mountain snow to Santee and the surrounding East County region.

The National Weather Service forecasts 1 to 2 inches of rain for inland areas including Santee, with higher amounts possible in the foothills and mountains. Winds could gust up to 45 mph, particularly in elevated areas, while coastal regions may see 8-to-10 foot waves.

The storm will arrive in waves, with the first round hitting Monday morning before intensifying in the afternoon and evening. Rain will continue on and off through Tuesday and Wednesday, with additional moisture likely Thursday and possibly Friday.

"The storm window is open," said Adam Roser, a National Weather Service forecaster, noting this system could mark the start of a longer period of cold, wet weather lasting through the end of February.

Snow levels will drop throughout the week, starting at 6,000-to-7,000 feet Monday and falling to 4,000 feet by Wednesday. Mount Laguna could see up to six inches of snow, while higher elevations in the San Bernardino Mountains may receive 2 to 3 feet. Alpine and Anza Borrego could see a dusting.

The rainfall is welcome news for Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, where winter storms have already produced a moderate-to-heavy wildflower bloom. The additional precipitation could enhance the spring display, though plant biologists say the timing and temperature conditions will determine whether it reaches "super bloom" status.

Santee residents should prepare for wet commutes, possible power outages from gusty winds, and cooler-than-normal temperatures, with daytime highs only reaching the low 60s. The storm could also trigger isolated thunderstorms and lightning across the region.
