Hurricane Marie is not expected to make a direct hit on Southern California, but Santee residents may still notice its influence over Labor Day weekend, according to the National Weather Service in San Diego.

In a forecast discussion issued at 1:48 p.m. Thursday, forecasters said Marie should remain well to the south and move west, keeping the storm itself away from the region. The main local effect will be tropical moisture moving into Southern California late Saturday into Sunday.

For Santee, the National Weather Service forecast calls for a slight chance of showers Saturday, a better chance late Saturday night and a chance of showers Sunday. Rainfall totals remain uncertain, but forecasters said valley totals on the higher end of model guidance could reach about 0.4 to 0.5 inches, while average projections are closer to 0.2 to 0.3 inches.

The coast will see the more direct hazard. NWS San Diego issued high surf and coastal flood advisories for San Diego County coastal areas from Saturday morning through Tuesday night, with elevated surf, strong rip currents and waves occasionally running farther up the beach than expected.

For Santee families heading to the coast over the holiday weekend, the practical takeaway is simple: watch the forecast before outdoor plans, expect muggy clouds and possible showers inland, and take beach advisories seriously if heading west.
