WASHINGTON (AP) โ President Donald Trump announced Thursday evening that he will sign an emergency order instructing the Homeland Security secretary to immediately pay Transportation Security Administration agents, moving to end airport chaos that has left nearly 50,000 security officers without two full paychecks.
"It is not an easy thing to do, but I am going to do it!" Trump posted on social media, framing the move as stopping the "Chaos at the Airports." Details of the funding mechanism were not immediately available, but officials indicated the administration plans to shift money from other department sources rather than declare a formal national emergency.
The DHS funding lapse โ now in its 41st day โ has produced extraordinary scenes at major airports. More than 11 percent of TSA officers nationwide missed shifts this week. At some airports, callout rates topped 40 percent on single days. Nearly 500 officers have resigned since the shutdown began in mid-February.
The acting TSA administrator warned Congress of potential airport closures if more employees refused to come to work, as San Diego-area travelers head into the spring break surge alongside millions nationwide.
Trump's emergency order, once signed, is expected to bring an end to the immediate security staffing crisis, though the underlying political standoff between Senate Democrats โ who have demanded ICE reforms โ and Republicans over DHS funding has not been resolved.
