Tax season brings stress for many East County families — but a free resource event next month aims to change that.
State Sen. Akilah Weber Pierson (D-SD) is hosting “Tacos & Taxes” on Saturday, March 14, at the Jackie Robinson YMCA in San Diego, 151 YMCA Way. The event offers free professional tax preparation for San Diego County residents with annual incomes under $69,000, along with complimentary tacos.
The event is designed to help low-to-moderate-income households claim state tax credits that often go unclaimed due to lack of awareness. That includes the California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC), which can put hundreds of dollars back in the hands of working families, as well as the Young Child Tax Credit and the Foster Youth Tax Credit.
The event runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Appointments are strongly recommended for anyone seeking full tax preparation. Walk-ins will be accepted for basic returns as availability allows. Residents must bring their W-2s, 1099s, Social Security cards and a photo ID.

Weber Pierson represents California’s 39th Senate District, which includes La Mesa, Lemon Grove, and parts of El Cajon and Spring Valley. Residents in those communities as well as unincorporated East County may qualify. The senator, a physician and former La Mesa City Council member, has focused her legislative work on healthcare access and economic equity.
