A brush fire in Spring Valley prompted temporary evacuations Monday night after flames broke out near Spring Street and Leigh Avenue, according to NBC 7 San Diego.
The fire, called the Leigh Fire, was reported around 7:30 p.m. Monday. San Miguel Fire & Rescue stopped the forward spread about an hour later, and NBC 7 reported the largest fire burned about five acres.
The San Diego County Sheriff's Office told NBC 7 that 35-year-old Miguel Hernandez was detained as a possible suspect. Deputies said Hernandez set at least three fires Monday night, according to the station.
An apartment complex near Spring Canyon Road was temporarily evacuated, and an evacuation point was set up at the Target parking lot at 935 Sweetwater Road. NBC 7 reported that evacuation orders had ended by the time of its update.
For Santee and nearby East County neighborhoods, the incident is a reminder of how quickly small vegetation fires can trigger evacuations when homes and canyon areas sit close together. Residents should monitor official alerts during active fire incidents and avoid relying on social media rumors while investigators sort out the cause.
