Singing Hills Golf Club at Sycuan is celebrating its 70th anniversary this month, marking seven decades of history in the scenic Dehesa Valley east of San Diego.

The club dates back to 1956, when UCLA coach and noted course designer Cecil Hollingsworth recognized the natural beauty of the rolling hills in Dehesa Valley. Hollingsworth and his partners opened the first course, Oak Glen, and later expanded the club into a 54-hole destination with Pine and Willow Glen courses — one of the region's premier golf facilities.

The club's resilience is part of its story. A catastrophic flood in 1979 washed away much of the grounds, but rather than shutter, the club was redesigned by California golf architect Ted Robinson Sr. That rebuild set the stage for the next chapter: the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation purchased the club in 2001, bringing it under tribal ownership and stewardship.

In 2023, Sycuan began development of the official training center for San Diego FC — the region's first professional soccer team — and the youth Right to Dream Academy on land adjacent to the golf club. The connection between a 70-year-old golf course and San Diego's newest sports franchise reflects how deeply rooted the Sycuan Band is in East County's growth.

"Celebrating 70 years reminds us how far Singing Hills has come, and we're proud to continue shaping its future for our guests and community," said Sycuan Tribal Chairman Cody Martinez. "From surviving the flood in 1979 to redesigning the golf club and bringing San Diego's first professional soccer team, we want to thank everyone — the community, partners and employees — who have supported us along the way."
