The San Diego Humane Society says its East County campus in El Cajon and its main San Diego shelter are operating under critical "over capacity" conditions this weekend after receiving a transport of dogs from the Imperial Valley.
According to the organization, 20 dogs were moved from the Humane Society of Imperial County on Friday, April 4, with four taken to the East County campus on North Marshall Avenue and the rest going to the San Diego campus on Gaines Street.
Humane Society officials said the transfer is part of an ongoing partnership aimed at preventing euthanasia in the Imperial Valley and that the move comes despite severe local space constraints.
The update said the East County site—serving El Cajon, La Mesa and Santee—has faced extreme crowding in recent months, including a reported 248% occupancy rate last October. Officials also said the organization is caring for more than 670 dogs across its five main campuses.
Before the newly arrived dogs are available for fostering or adoption, the Humane Society said they will receive veterinary screening, spay/neuter procedures and behavioral evaluations. Adoption hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday.
