San Diego Humane Society is asking residents across the county to support its annual Give Humane: Day of Giving fundraiser as the organization deals with overcrowded shelters and ongoing care for animals rescued from a large-scale neglect case in Julian, according to Patch.
The June 25 fundraiser aims to raise $1 million for animal care programs. Donations made through June 25 will be matched dollar for dollar up to $50,000 through a gift from Charles and Carol Baum, the organization said.
Humane Society officials told Patch that demand for services has increased while shelters operate beyond capacity. The organization also highlighted Dewey, a dog treated for an ear infection and spinal abnormalities before being adopted, as an example of the medical care supported by the fundraiser.
For Santee and East County residents, the fundraiser is tied to a regional shelter system that has been under extra strain since the Julian rescue. Donations can be made at GiveHumaneSD.org, and the full report is available from Patch.
