San Diego Humane Society will reduce adoption fees for adult dogs and cats to $50 from May 1 through May 17 as part of the Bissell Pet Foundation’s national Empty the Shelters initiative, according to Patch. The discount applies to dogs and cats 7 months and older.

The promotion comes as the organization reports it is caring for 1,585 animals, including 668 dogs and 777 cats. Patch reported that San Diego Humane Society is caring for about 20% more animals than this time last year, while dogs and cats are staying in shelters roughly 30% longer.

The El Cajon campus is one of the most crowded, with dog capacity at 152%, according to the Humane Society figures cited by Patch. Other campuses are also above normal limits, including Oceanside at 155%, San Diego at 150% and Escondido at 129%.

For Santee and East County residents, the nearest main campus is in El Cajon. San Diego Humane Society has extended walk-in adoption hours to 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday at its El Cajon, Escondido, Oceanside and San Diego campuses.
