San Diego Humane Society will waive all adoption fees Saturday, June 6, as part of the third annual California Adopt-a-Pet Day, East County Magazine reported. The event comes as shelters across the state continue dealing with overcrowding.
The Humane Society has more than 800 pets waiting for adoption across its El Cajon, San Diego, Escondido and Oceanside campuses. All campuses will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and adoptions will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis.
The statewide adoption event is hosted by California Animal Welfare Association, the San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. East County Magazine reported that the initiative helped facilitate 3,609 adoptions across California in 2024 and nearly 5,000 in 2025.
For Santee residents thinking about adopting, the El Cajon campus is the closest San Diego Humane Society location. The organization says each adoption includes spay or neuter surgery, current vaccinations, a microchip, post-adoption training support and a complimentary veterinary exam at participating clinics.
