Triple-digit temperatures forced the cancellation of the Santee Farmers Market on Wednesday, according to ABC 10News, leaving the normally busy East County market nearly empty during this week's dangerous heat.

Most vendors stayed home after the market was canceled, but two still came to Santee with limited offerings for regular customers. ABC 10News reported that Timothy Mapes, owner of A*Slobbrin Pet Bakery, said some customers rely on the weekly stop to stock up on pet treats for several weeks at a time.

Another vendor, Avy of SD Lotus Bites, told 10News that the Santee market has been an important way to introduce customers to her food and culture. She said the business is about two months old and that each handmade item is personal to her.

The cancellation came as the National Weather Service kept San Diego County valleys, including Santee, under an extreme heat warning until 8 p.m. Thursday. Forecasters warned of highs in the upper 90s to 105 degrees and said heat-related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat events.
