San Diego Humane Society has taken in more than 50 surrendered Yorkies and huskies from two overwhelmed owners, pushing the organization deeper into a record-breaking dog crowding period, according to Patch.

The first group arrived July 28, with eight Yorkies taken to the Escondido campus, 10 huskies to the San Diego campus and three huskies to the El Cajon campus. Patch reported the Yorkies are being treated for severe flea infestations, while many of the huskies are fearful and will need behavioral support.

Through July 27, San Diego Humane Society averaged 663 adult dogs in care each day, topping the previous July record of 612 set in 2024. Including puppies, the organization is caring for 792 dogs, and it has about 1,950 animals total in its care.

The story matters in Santee because the Humane Society's El Cajon campus is one of the walk-in adoption sites serving East County residents. Adoption fees for all animals except horses are being reduced by 50% throughout August, ending with a fee-waived adoption day on Aug. 29.

Walk-in adoptions are available from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday at the organization's El Cajon, Escondido, Oceanside and San Diego campuses. Source: Patch, citing San Diego Humane Society.
