San Diego Humane Society is urging residents to check shelter listings after Fourth of July fireworks led to a surge in lost pets across the county, according to NBC 7 San Diego. The agency had taken in 127 lost pets as of Monday, July 6, and had reunited 22 with their owners.
The Humane Society is waiving reclaim fees at its El Cajon, Escondido, Oceanside and San Diego campuses through Tuesday, July 7, in an effort to get animals home faster. Owners are asked to identify the campus where their pet is being held and bring proof of ownership, such as photos, vaccination records, adoption paperwork, microchip information and a photo ID.
For Santee residents, the El Cajon campus is likely to be the closest place to check in person, but the Humane Society updates its lost-and-found listings continuously online. Owners can also text "lost" to 858-SAN-LOST for step-by-step guidance.
The agency also recommends posting clear photos and basic details, including breed, color, gender and last-seen location, in neighborhood groups and on social media. If a missing pet is microchipped, owners should contact the microchip company and report the animal missing right away.
The post-holiday spike is not unusual. NBC 7 reported that 253 stray pets came into San Diego Humane Society between July 4 and July 7 last year.
