Teen Killed, Pedestrian Injured in Navajo Road Crash Near Cowles Mountain

A 14-year-old girl died Sunday morning after a vehicle jumped a curb, hit a pedestrian and crashed into a tree on Navajo Road near Cowles Mountain, according to East County Magazine.

San Diego police and fire crews responded shortly after 11:30 a.m. May 3 to the 7500 block of Navajo Road near Golfcrest Drive. East County Magazine reported that a 35-year-old woman driving a 2017 Mazda 6 westbound went onto the north sidewalk, struck an 18-year-old male pedestrian and continued into a tree in the road divider.

The 14-year-old passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver sustained a fractured right ankle, while a 1-year-old boy and an 8-year-old boy in the vehicle were not injured. The pedestrian suffered a concussion and an avulsion injury to his left arm, according to the report.

The crash drew 25 firefighting personnel from San Diego Fire-Rescue, La Mesa Fire Department and El Cajon Fire Department, along with three ambulances and a rescue rig. The identities of those involved have not been released.

For Santee residents, the crash is a reminder to use caution on the busy Navajo Road corridor near Mission Trails and Cowles Mountain. The SDPD Traffic Unit is investigating, and anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
