Four rare western spotted skunks have been released after weeks of rehabilitation and socialization at San Diego Humane Society's Ramona Wildlife Center, according to ABC 10News and City News Service.

The group included one orphaned skunk flown more than 400 miles by Flying Tails Animal Rescue from Sierra Wildlife Rescue in Northern California to join orphaned skunks already in care in Ramona, the report said. The four were released into a remote habitat in Valley Center after reaching the weight and developmental milestones needed to survive on their own.

San Diego Humane Society officials told ABC 10News that western spotted skunks are rarely seen in wildlife rehabilitation. The Ramona Wildlife Center typically handles hundreds of striped skunks each year, but six spotted skunks from different litters in one season was unusual.

Two spotted skunks remain in care. Wildlife staff moved the smallest skunk to an outdoor pre-release habitat in late June and paired it with a slightly older skunk so the younger animal can continue learning natural behaviors before release.

For East County residents, the story highlights the specialized wildlife work happening just up the road in Ramona. Anyone who finds an injured, sick or orphaned wild animal should contact San Diego Humane Society or visit its wildlife help resources before trying to intervene.
