El Cajon will not hold HauntFest in 2026 after city officials cited budget constraints and the need to focus public dollars on essential services, according to East County Magazine.
The Halloween-season event has been one of El Cajon's better-known community traditions, drawing families and visitors downtown each fall. In a city social media announcement cited by East County Magazine, officials said the decision was difficult but tied to responsible stewardship of public funds.
The cancellation comes after El Cajon had already shortened its car show and outdoor concert seasons because of budget pressure. Residents and downtown business owners have responded with mixed reactions, with some questioning the city's priorities and others supporting a tighter approach to spending.
For Santee residents, the cancellation takes one popular nearby fall outing off the East County calendar. Families who usually make the short drive to downtown El Cajon for Halloween activities will need to watch for replacement events in Santee, La Mesa, Lakeside or other inland communities.
