Fourth Bidder Revealed in Padres Ownership Race: Detroit Pistons Owner Tom Gores Enters $3.5B Fight

The race to own the San Diego Padres gained a notable new contender this week as Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores entered the bidding for the MLB franchise, according to a report by The Athletic.

Gores, the Chairman and CEO of Beverly Hills-based Platinum Equity, is worth an estimated $10.1 billion according to Forbes. He acquired the Pistons in 2011 and took full ownership in 2015. In 2024, he also purchased a 27 percent stake in the Los Angeles Chargers β€” giving him multi-sport portfolio experience heading into the Padres pursuit.

With Gores now confirmed as a fourth bidder, the ownership race features some of sport's biggest names: Chelsea FC co-owner Jose E. Feliciano; Dan Friedkin, a San Diego native who also owns English Premier League club Everton and Italian club AS Roma; and Golden State Warriors owner Joe Lacob.

The price tag for the franchise is expected to shatter MLB records. The Athletic reports final bids are due next month, with a deal potentially in place by the end of April. If the team sells for the projected $3.5 billion, it would be the highest price ever paid for a Major League Baseball franchise.

For Padres fans in Santee and across East County, the sale carries more than just financial intrigue β€” the identity and vision of the next owner will shape the direction of the franchise for years to come. The team opens the 2026 season today at Petco Park, with a 1:10 p.m. first pitch against the Tigers.
