A pilot died Tuesday morning when a Piper PA-22 crashed on a hillside in Ocotillo Wells, according to authorities cited by NBC 7 San Diego.

Cal Fire crews hiked to the wreckage on Blowsand Hill near Quarry Road and found the pilot's body. Cal Fire and the Federal Aviation Administration said the pilot was the aircraft's only occupant.

The plane caught fire and burned, but flames remained within the crash site, Cal Fire Capt. Josh Cormode told NBC 7. The report said California State Parks would take over the incident.

The cause had not been reported as of NBC 7's Tuesday update. The crash occurred in eastern San Diego County; read the developing report at NBC 7 San Diego.
