Janet Walker, an 86-year-old resident of Lantern Crest Senior Living in Santee, is celebrating Mother’s Day with three daughters, eight grandchildren and a growing number of great-grandchildren, according to Times of San Diego.
Walker has lived at Lantern Crest for a total of eight years. She first moved there with her late husband, later left when he needed specialized care for dementia, and returned after his death when her daughters encouraged her to come back to the community she knew.
Her daughters have become part of that community too. For nearly five years, Times of San Diego reported, they have decorated Walker’s apartment entryway for holidays and attended Lantern Crest happy hour in costume, from Christmas helpers to Easter outfits, dancing with residents and handing out small gifts.
Walker is also known for making memory quilts for her grandchildren, with each quilt reflecting the child’s interests and milestones. Earlier this year, she displayed the quilts in Lantern Crest’s lobby during a community quilt show and is now teaching other residents the craft.
For Santee readers, the story is a quiet reminder that local community is not only built at public meetings and big events. Sometimes it shows up in a senior living lobby, a handmade quilt and daughters who keep making happy hour a little happier.
