A former La Mesa math teacher will spend three years in state prison after pleading guilty to an unlawful sexual relationship with a teenage student, San Diego County prosecutors announced Thursday.
Michael Davis, 35, taught at The Learning Choice Academy (TLC Academy), a charter hybrid school located on Spring Street in La Mesa that serves students from transitional kindergarten through 12th grade. Davis was arrested at the campus last April after allegations surfaced of a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old female student.
Davis originally faced a dozen felony counts but pleaded guilty to a single count of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor. In addition to his three-year prison sentence, the court ordered Davis to register as a Tier One sex offender โ a classification that requires at minimum 10 years of registration.
According to the criminal complaint filed by the San Diego County District Attorney, the relationship took place between February and March of last year.
The Learning Choice Academy operates as a hybrid program, offering families a choice between full homeschool enrollment or a blended model with three days on campus and two days at home. In addition to La Mesa, the school has campuses in Chula Vista and Clairemont Mesa East.
