A La Mesa woman is warning other patients and families after she said scam callers repeatedly reached her hospital room while she was recovering from surgery, according to NBC 7 San Diego.
Anita Fritz told NBC 7 the calls came shortly after a medical procedure at Sharp Grossmont Hospital, when she was feeling groggy and vulnerable. She said one caller asked for her Social Security number, while another asked for bank account information so a check could be deposited.
Fritz said she received at least six calls before unplugging the hospital room phone, NBC 7 reported. Sharp HealthCare told the station it is committed to patient privacy and does not release protected patient information without written consent, but said random-number dialing can still allow scam callers to reach phone lines.
Scripps, UC San Diego Health and Kaiser Permanente also described their patient-room call procedures to NBC 7. Scripps said reported spam numbers can be blocked and patient room numbers can be changed or placed behind a brief phone prompt, while Kaiser said its system requires operator assistance before calls are transferred to patient rooms.
The warning matters for Santee and East County families with loved ones in local hospitals: if a caller asks for a Social Security number, bank account or other sensitive information, hang up and verify through hospital staff directly.
