A large animal rescue operation is underway at a rural Julian sanctuary where hundreds of animals were seized Friday, according to East County Magazine.
San Diego Humane Society, San Diego County Department of Animal Services and partner agencies launched the operation at Villa Chardonnay, Horses With Wings, Inc., on Boulder Creek Road after Humane Law Enforcement officers served a search warrant. The effort is being supported by veterinary teams, emergency responders and animal care specialists.
East County Magazine reported preliminary figures from the scene included about 165 horses and several ponies, more than 150 cats and 30 dogs, along with donkeys, alpacas, goats, geese, chickens, roosters, turkeys, ravens and a crow. Officials said the final count was still being determined as teams worked through the property.
The San Diego Humane Society said a judge transferred ownership of the animals from the sanctuary to the Humane Society late Friday. The organization is asking anyone who believes an animal was surrendered to or housed at Villa Chardonnay to complete a form so investigators can follow up.
For East County residents, the case is significant both because of its scale and because local shelters and rescue partners are already under heavy pressure. East County Magazine reported that the Humane Society is asking the community for help as rescued animals are assessed, treated and relocated.
