Julian, the mountain community known for apple pie and fall foliage, is about to add a new tradition: live youth theater. The newly formed Julian Junior Theater will take the stage for the first time in April with a production of Annie Jr., the beloved musical about a scrappy orphan who never stops believing in a better tomorrow.
Julian Junior Theater was incorporated as a California nonprofit with a straightforward mission: to foster self-confidence, self-expression, and a lifelong love of the performing arts among young people in the rural Julian region. Co-founders Cara Marino and Vanessa Contopulos are directing the debut production, which will feature local youth bringing the "Hard Knock Life" to life.
All four performances will be held at The Little Theater at Julian High School. Show times are 7 p.m. on Friday, April 24; 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 25; and 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 26. Tickets are $10 and available online at julianjuniortheater.ludus.com.
For a community that has long relied on day-trippers for economic activity, a home-grown performing arts program represents something more lasting โ a reason for families to put down roots and invest in local culture. Organizers say they hope Julian Junior Theater will become a permanent fixture in the mountain community.
