More than 500 animals are being evaluated, rescued and cared for after authorities served a search warrant Friday at Villa Chardonnay Horses With Wings, a 40-acre animal sanctuary in Julian, according to East County Magazine.
The San Diego Humane Society, the County Department of Animal Services and other animal welfare groups are handling animals that include more than 330 cats, about 30 dogs, an estimated 165 horses, several ponies and other animals such as donkeys, ducks, alpacas, peacocks, goats and sheep. Ownership of hundreds of animals has been legally transferred to the Humane Society following the operation.
Humane Society officials described widespread neglect and severe medical issues, including malnutrition, open wounds, respiratory problems and contagious infections, according to East County Magazine. Officials said at least two cats and two horses had to be euthanized, while many others required immediate care. Representatives for Villa Chardonnay have denied neglect and said the animals were well cared for.
The case matters beyond Julian because the rescue is putting pressure on animal shelters across San Diego County. The Humane Society said it is already over capacity, with more than 2,000 animals in its care, and that many of the cats from Villa Chardonnay are receiving care at its El Cajon campus.
A criminal investigation has begun, but no charges had been filed as of East County Magazine's report. People who boarded or surrendered animals to Villa Chardonnay can contact the Humane Society through sdhumane.org/julianrescue, while residents who want to help are being encouraged to adopt current shelter animals or donate to support medical and care costs.
