The USS Boxer, an amphibious assault ship based in San Diego, has been ordered to the Middle East along with elements of the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, as the U.S.-Iran war reached its one-month mark Saturday with the American wounded toll surpassing 300.\n\nThe Boxer and two other San Diego-based ships deployed in mid-March and are currently en route. Meanwhile, the USS Tripoli — an amphibious assault ship based in Japan — has arrived in the region after being redirected from exercises near Taiwan roughly two weeks ago. U.S. Central Command said the Tripoli brings transport and strike fighter aircraft and amphibious assault assets.\n\nThe latest casualty figures came after Iran fired six ballistic missiles and 29 drones at Saudi Arabia's Prince Sultan air base on Friday, injuring at least 15 U.S. troops, including five seriously. Central Command said more than 300 service members have been wounded overall in the war, with 30 remaining out of action and 10 considered seriously wounded. Thirteen American service members have been killed.\n\nOn the diplomatic front, top foreign ministers from Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt gathered in Islamabad, Pakistan on Sunday to explore pathways toward ending the conflict. The U.S. and Israel were not participating in the talks, and Iran's parliament speaker publicly dismissed them as a distraction.\n\nFor San Diego, which is home to Naval Base San Diego, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar and Camp Pendleton, the war's escalation hits close to home. The Boxer is among several San Diego-based assets now committed to the region. With an April 6 deadline set by President Trump for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the coming week may prove pivotal for the conflict and for the thousands of military families watching from East County.
