Houthis Enter the Fight: First Missile Attack on Israel Raises Stakes for Camp Pendleton Marines at Sea

Iran-backed Houthi rebels launched their first missile attack targeting Israel on Saturday, claiming a barrage of ballistic missiles aimed at "sensitive Israeli military sites" in southern Israel. Israel's military reported intercepting the incoming missile โ€” fired from Yemen โ€” near Beer Sheba, close to Israel's main nuclear research facility.

The attack marks the first time the Houthis have directly targeted Israel since the U.S.-Israel military campaign against Iran began on February 28. It also triggers concerns about renewed Houthi disruptions to commercial shipping lanes in the Red Sea โ€” the same waterway that previously saw San Diego-based naval destroyers intercepting drone and missile attacks in 2024.

For San Diego military families, the development is impossible to ignore. The USS Boxer Amphibious Ready Group and the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit โ€” based out of Camp Pendleton, roughly 30 miles north of Santee โ€” deployed to the Middle East earlier this month, carrying an estimated 2,000 to 4,000 Marines and sailors. They were positioned in the region for potential Gulf operations and to address threats in the Strait of Hormuz.

A ceasefire remains elusive. Iran publicly rejected a 15-point U.S. proposal earlier this week, presenting its own counterproposal that includes demands for war reparations and continued control over the Strait of Hormuz โ€” a chokepoint that carries roughly 20% of the world's oil supply.

As of Saturday afternoon, diplomatic efforts continue, with mediators pushing for face-to-face talks between U.S. and Iranian officials. Meanwhile, U.S. and Israeli forces continue active operations targeting Iranian military infrastructure.
