The future of Fanita Ranch remains unsettled after two recent court rulings against approvals for the long-debated housing project in northern Santee. East County Magazine reported Saturday that opponents, city officials and the developer are now weighing what may come next for the roughly 2,600-acre site.

The project has been proposed for decades and has drawn sustained debate over housing growth, wildfire risk, traffic and open space. HomeFed's current version has called for about 3,000 homes, along with parks and open space, but courts have repeatedly sided with project opponents on key approval issues.

According to East County Magazine, environmental groups said conservation should remain the priority for the land, while HomeFed said it is reviewing its options. The report also noted that the developer could seek review from the California Supreme Court or return with a changed proposal.

Santee leaders remain divided over the path forward. Vice Mayor Ronn Hall told East County Magazine he expects the developer may revise the project, while Mayor John Minto raised concerns about whether state housing pressure could eventually limit the city's control over what gets built.

For Santee residents, the practical question is no longer only whether the earlier approvals survived in court. It is whether Fanita Ranch comes back in a smaller form, heads into another appeal or becomes a longer fight over how Santee balances housing mandates, wildfire concerns and voter-backed limits on major General Plan changes.
