A driver who allegedly stole a truck is in custody after leading police on a vehicle and foot pursuit from San Diego freeway lanes to a drainage canal in El Cajon.

According to the El Cajon Police Department, officers located the suspect around 11:15 p.m. Tuesday evening, but the driver refused to stop and fled onto Interstate 8, initiating a pursuit. The driver eventually exited the freeway in El Cajon, lost control of the stolen truck, and then abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.

Sheriff's deputies provided helicopter support from the SDSO's ASTREA aviation unit, helping ground units track the suspect into a nearby drainage canal where he was located and taken into custody. The suspect's name and age had not been confirmed at time of reporting.

The California Highway Patrol is handling the investigation. No injuries were reported during the pursuit.
