Sheriff's detectives arrested two people Tuesday after investigating a reported burglary at a home in the 5600 block of Dehesa Road in unincorporated El Cajon, according to East County Magazine.
Deputies from the Alpine Sheriff's Station first responded June 3 to a burglary-in-progress call at the home. A previous long-term Airbnb renter had left the property, and three people had entered it, Lt. Jason Phillips told the publication.
Detectives later determined the occupants had not established residency and were burglarizing the home by stealing utilities, including gas and electric service. On June 23, detectives served a search warrant and arrested Kevin Barlow, 45, and Amanda Hopkins, 44, on burglary charges related to utility theft.
Investigators also seized evidence of utility theft, documents related to alleged fraudulent occupation of other properties, personal electronic devices and narcotics, according to East County Magazine. The property has been released to its legal owner, and the investigation is continuing.
For Santee and East County residents, the case highlights a practical concern around vacant homes, short-term rentals and properties between tenants. Neighbors who see suspicious activity at an empty property can contact the Sheriff's Department rather than trying to confront anyone themselves.
