The Olaf Wieghorst Museum in downtown El Cajon will host Olaf Wieghorst Day on Saturday, May 2, with an afternoon event honoring the artist long known as the "Dean of Western Art."
East County Magazine reported the celebration will run from 3 to 6 p.m. at the museum, 131 Rea Ave., and will feature emcee John Carroll, birthday cake, live auctions and opportunity drawings. Beer and wine will also be available for purchase for guests 21 and older.
Wieghorst, who was born in Denmark in 1899 and later served in the U.S. Cavalry, became known for paintings that captured horses, cowboys and Western landscapes with unusual technical accuracy. He eventually made East County his home, and the museum now includes his relocated home and studio.
Members of the El Cajon Mounted Police are also expected to attend, according to the report. Admission is free, and more details are available through the Olaf Wieghorst Museum.
