A DUI checkpoint is scheduled for the 900 block of East Main Street in El Cajon next week, El Cajon Police Department announced.
The checkpoint will operate from 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27, through 2 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 28. Officers will screen drivers for signs of alcohol or drug impairment during the operation.
According to the department, checkpoint locations are selected based on a history of DUI crashes and arrests in the area. The stated goal of the program is to deter impaired driving and improve public safety.
Drivers facing a first-time DUI conviction face steep consequences — an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license, according to the department.
Funding for the checkpoint was provided by the CHP Cannabis Tax Fund Grant Program. East County residents planning to be out late Friday night should plan accordingly and arrange alternative transportation if they intend to drink.
