A two-alarm fire at an El Cajon assisted living center forced dozens of staff members and more than 100 patients to evacuate early Monday, according to ABC 10News.
The fire was reported just before 6:30 a.m. at Carroll's Residential Care, 655 Mollison Ave., the station reported, citing the Heartland Fire Department. Fire officials said the blaze started in the facility's kitchen area as firefighters from multiple agencies responded.
ABC 10News reported that firefighters knocked down the fire shortly before 7 a.m., but patients and staff were not immediately allowed back inside. Fire officials said the evacuation was especially challenging because many residents had mobility issues or complex medical needs.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, according to the report.
For Santee and East County families with relatives in residential care, the incident is a reminder to ask facilities how evacuations are handled when residents need extra help moving quickly during an emergency.
