Several inland San Diego County preserves will close to the public beginning Aug. 1 as summer heat intensifies across the region, according to East County Magazine.

The closures include El Capitan Preserve near Lakeside, Hellhole Canyon Preserve in Valley Center and Mt. Gower Preserve in Ramona. East County Magazine reported the closures are a seasonal response to late-summer inland heat, when exposed trails can climb into the high 90s and triple digits.

Agua Caliente Regional Park and Vallecito County Park in the Anza-Borrego Desert have already been closed since Memorial Day weekend and are expected to reopen after Labor Day, according to the report. County parks crews are also expected to use the closure window for maintenance and trail restoration work.

For Santee residents, the biggest nearby impact is El Capitan Preserve, a short drive east near Lakeside. County officials are urging hikers who use other open trails to shift outings to early morning or evening, bring extra water and avoid taking dogs onto hot exposed terrain.
