Our Lady of Light Parish in Descanso will hold its 89th annual Holy Smoke Deep Pit BBQ on Sunday, Sept. 6, continuing a long-running East County community tradition, according to East County Magazine.
The event begins at 11 a.m. and features slow-cooked BBQ beef and sides, homemade cobbler, live country and rock music from The Wish Band, door prizes, crafts, children’s games and a $500 grand prize drawing.
East County Magazine reported that visitors coming from Interstate 8 should exit at Highway 79, head north, turn left on Riverside Drive and continue about a half-mile to the church.
For Santee residents looking ahead to late-summer weekend plans, the Descanso BBQ is another reminder that East County’s community calendar stretches well beyond the city limits, with mountain-town events close enough for a day trip.
