A well-known Cuyamaca Rancho State Park hiking destination formerly called Stonewall Peak has officially been renamed Cush-pii, according to East County Magazine.
The California Advisory Committee on Geographic Names approved the change to restore the mountain's traditional Kumeyaay name, which means Sharp Peak. The former name referred to Confederate Gen. Stonewall Jackson, a connection that had drawn concern as communities around the country have reconsidered public names honoring Confederate figures.
The summit stands 5,730 feet above sea level and is known for wide views of the Cuyamaca Mountains. East County Magazine described the route as a roughly 4-mile round-trip hike that is moderate to strenuous, with cable-assisted steps near the granite peak.
For Santee residents, the change affects one of the region's most recognizable nearby outdoor spots. Visitors can access Cush-pii from the Paso Picacho campground day-use area, where vehicle parking fees vary by season.
