Several new California laws take effect July 1, bringing changes that could show up in daily life for Santee families, shoppers, students and businesses, according to Patch.

The new rules include standardized food date labels, allergen disclosure requirements for large restaurant chains, school policies limiting student smartphone use, and at least one all-gender restroom on California campuses serving grades 1 through 12. Patch also reported changes affecting autonomous vehicle enforcement, certain firearm sales, rural maternity care and housing near public transit.

For local families, the school-related changes may be the most visible as districts and campuses implement cellphone limits and restroom access requirements. For consumers, food labels are expected to shift toward clearer "best if used by" and "use by" language, while large chain restaurants will be required to disclose common allergens including milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, wheat, peanuts, soybeans and sesame.

The housing law could matter in communities across San Diego County where state rules and local zoning collide. Patch reported that Senate Bill 79 is meant to expand opportunities for multifamily housing near public transit hubs, an issue Santee residents already follow closely whenever growth, traffic and neighborhood character come up at City Hall.

The laws take effect Wednesday, July 1. Residents should watch for policy notices from schools, menu updates at chain restaurants and state or local guidance as agencies begin applying the new rules. Source: Patch.
