NBC News projects that Democrat Marni von Wilpert has won California’s 48th Congressional District, defeating Republican Jim Desmond. Von Wilpert serves on the San Diego City Council; Desmond is a San Diego County supervisor.
NBC’s Wednesday results showed von Wilpert with 92,924 votes, or 59.6%, and Desmond with 63,015 votes, or 40.4%. The projection follows an election night when the race remained too close to call.
The district spans parts of San Diego and Riverside counties. Republican Rep. Darrell Issa previously represented it and announced his retirement earlier this year, according to NBC 7.
In the neighboring 51st District, NBC also projects a win for incumbent Democrat Sara Jacobs over Republican Ricardo Cabrera. That district includes El Cajon, La Mesa and Spring Valley. These are NBC projections, not certified final results.
