The United States and Israel launched coordinated military strikes against Iran early Saturday in what President Donald Trump called "major combat operations," a development with potential implications for the thousands of military families based in San Diego County, including many in Santee and East County.

According to the Associated Press, some of the first strikes appeared to hit areas near the offices of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iranian media reported strikes at multiple locations nationwide. Iran responded by launching waves of missiles and drones targeting Israel and U.S. military installations in Bahrain, Kuwait, and Qatar.

"When we are finished, take over your government. It will be yours to take," Trump said in a video address announcing the operation, urging Iranians to rise up against the Islamic Republic leadership. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the joint operation would "create the conditions for the brave Iranian people to take their fate into their own hands."

San Diego County is home to some of the largest military installations in the United States. Marine Corps Air Station Miramar — a major hub for Marine aviation — sits within city limits, while Naval Base San Diego and Naval Air Station North Island anchor a massive Navy presence in the region. Camp Pendleton, one of the country's largest Marine Corps bases, is located roughly 40 miles to the north. Thousands of active-duty service members based in the region could face deployment implications as the situation develops.

The situation was rapidly evolving Saturday morning. Residents with family members stationed at local military installations are encouraged to monitor official communications from their respective military branches for any updates on missions or deployments.
